the playford family bible of henry and sarah playford

below are select pages from the family bible of henry and sarah playford which was originally purchased in sections by sarah (prior to marriage) and was later bound into two volumes which are both quite large and heavy. the bible was one of the precious items brought out from england by henry and sarah, luckily surviving the wreck of the ship "juliana" - to this day one can see the water stains on many of the pages.

1 inside the front cover of the bible is the gold embossed name of sarah elizabeth goodsall. the spelling of her name here differs from all other records (including parish registers in england, shipping records and her death certificate) in which it is spelt "goodsell".

2 inside the bible, in henry's handwriting, are the birthdates of their children.

4 the first page of the preface to this edition of the bible. the first few pages of the bible (including the preface) have been reinforced and rebound into the bible. from the water stains it can be assumed that these pages were the most heavily damaged during the shipwreck and hence the need for reinforcing. the larger picture will reveal both the water stains and the new reinforcing.

5 the second page of the preface.
