	tenterden in kent is where thomas playford married catherine newman on april 16, 1734 at the parish church of st mildred. tenterden is situated about eight miles north by road of beckley, the village in and about which later generations of playfords were to live before their migration to australia.

	rolvenden in kent is where james (b 1743), the fourth child of thomas playford and catherine (newman), worked as a gardener. in the 18th century the gardener was usually employed by the church, so it can be assumed he tended to the church grounds pictured above.

	beckley is the village where the playfords settled from the time of james playford and elizabeth medhurst. it is the village from which many departed to the colonies looking for better prospects. even after those who migrated to australia had left, playfords continued to live in and around beckley.
